Activity5: listening practice，A private conversation

This activity is based as the article in No. 1 of NEW CONCEPT ENGLISH 2, “A private conversation”.

Pre-listening:

Purpose: to build up students’ background information about the listening material. Instruction: Students work in groups. They talk about “What do you usually do when you are in the theatre? Do you always speak loudly? What should you do when someone talk loudly in the theatre”? After discussion each group chooses a student to tell the class their answers. Finally the teacher asks students to understand the requirements of instruction. Group 1 Group 2 Group 3 Group 4 what do you usually do when you are in the theatre? Do you always speak loudly? Purpose: to help students understand the requirements of instruction

Instructions: The teacher explains the different tasks for three times of playing the listening material. The first time they should listen to the main idea of material without taking any notes. Then the second time they should note down the key words which are related to questions. The last time they could review the noted information and check the answers. After that students start to carry out the tasks.

Post-listening:

Purpose: to help students make a further understanding of the listening material.

Instructions: The teacher checks the answers and asks students to correct the chart by themselves and add more information in it. At last the students prepare to use their own words to retell the text , and the teacher encourage several students to give their performance in front of the class.

Listening material:

Last week I went to the theatre, I had a very good seat. The play was very interesting, I did not enjoy it .A young man and a young woman were sitting behind me ,They were talking loudly, I got very angry, I could not hear the actors. I turned round , I look at the man and the woman angrily ,They did not pay any attention .in the end, I could not bear it . I turned round again “I can’t hear a word”, I said angrily.

‘It’s none of your business’the young man said rudely . “This is a private conversation!”
