34.Passage Three

Around the world more and more people are taking part in dangerous sports

and activities. Of course, there have always been people who have looked for adventure—those who have climbed the highest mountains, explored unknown parts of the world or sailed in small boats across the greatest oceans. Now, however, there are people who seek an immediate thrill from a risky activity which may only last a few minutes or even seconds.

I would consider bungee jumping to be a good example of such an activity. You jump from a high place (perhaps a bridge, or a hot-air balloon) 200 metres above the ground with an elastic rope tied to your ankles. You fall at up to 150 kilometres an hour till the rope stops you from hitting the ground. It is estimated that 2 million people around the world have now tried bungee jumping. Other activities as risky as bungee jumping involve jumping from tall buildings and diving into the sea from the top of high cliffs. Why do people take part in such activities as these? Some psychologists suggest that it is because life in modern societies has become safe and boring. Not very long ago, people's lives were constantly under threat. They had to go out and hunt for food, diseases could not easily be cured, and life was a continuous battle for survival.

Nowadays, according to many people, life offers little excitement. They live and work in a comparatively safe environment; they buy food in shops, and there are doctors and hospitals to look after them if they become ill. The answer for some of these people is to seek danger in activities such as bungee jumping

36.Betsy's attitude toward her own work is ______() A.enthusiastic B.negative C.annoying D.crazy

37.On-the-job smoking is a hot issue for both smokers and nonsmokers,

and many managers now see smoking as a productivity(生产力) problem. Although some people question whether smoking really affects one’s productivity, it has, in fact, been proven that a smoker costs a company more than a non-smoker. According to Professor William Weis, a smoking employee costs his or her employer about $5,700 more a year than a never-smoker. These costs include medical care, lost earnings and insurance. and absence due to smoking breaks is one of the productivity problems, yet it accounts for a great deal of employer costs.

When the issue of smoking at the workplace is discussed, perhaps the most important problem is the health risk that smoking causes to both smokers and never-smokers. It has long been proven that smoking is linked to lung cancer. Now many health experts warn that passive smoking can cause lung cancer and other illnesses in healthy never-smokers. Passive smoking can be defined as exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke in enclosed areas. Anyone who has been with smokers indeed knows that their smoke can cause eye irritation(刺激), coughing, headaches and throat soreness. While eye irritation may seem a small thing to some smokers, it nevertheless is a problem that occurs every workday in offices and break rooms and can lead to greater health problems. Employees who do not smoke should not be subjected (遭受) to the risks of passive smoking and need to be able to work in a safe environment. Surgeon General Koop states that the right of the smoker stops at the point where his or her smoking increases the disease risk of those occupying the same environment

All the following cases are on-the-job smoking except that______() A.an employer smokes while working in the office B.a taxi driver smokes while driving the car

其中,it是形式主语,真正的主语是后面的pretending that you didn’t know the

truth。

故选A

【精析】Dcan表示可以,能够;may表示可以,可能;must和have to

本句中there is no gas or electricity表示一种客观存在的事实。

【精析】Acommunicate:交流,沟通,常与with搭配使用,communicate with sb.

故选A

当陈述句部分含有used to时,反意疑问句部分应用usedn't或didn't。因此,空处应填didn't there或usedn't there。

【精析】Cafter all:毕竟;all in all:总的来说,总之;above all:尤其,最重要的是;all over:到处,遍及。

39.见解析Part-time Jobs In contemporary society, college students' taking part-time jobs has become a hot topic. It has a great influence on their life. I believe there are both benefits and drawbacks. Clearly, in addition to getting an income, college students taking part-time jobs may enjoy a more exciting lifestyle. as they can meet people from all walks of life and develop a sense of responsibility which can't be learned in the classroom. On the other hand, the negative effects of part-time jobs are also obvious. Students who take part-time jobs may spend less time focusing on study, and if they seek to excel in both the part-time jobs and study, the busy life they lead may put their health at risk. Besides, the society is much more complicated than they have expected, and they sometimes may be exposed to danger. In my opinion, college students ought to keep a balance between academic study and part-time jobs, and always bear in mind that a student's priority is to acquire knowledge at school.
