___41___ of what sportsmanship(体育精神)is all about.
Everyone feels great when they win, but it can be just as ___42___ to be a good sport(有运动家品格的人)when you have won a game as when you have lost one. Sportsmanship takes ___43___ — when you work really hard at a sport, it‟s not easy to admit you made a bad play or someone has more skills than you. In competition — as in life — you may not ___44___ win but you can learn something from losing, too.
It‟s pretty tough to lose, so it is definitely annoying if someone continues ___45___ you or your team after the competition is over. Sometimes it‟s hard to swallow your pride and walk on. But there‟s always the next match.
When you do ___46___ — and it will happen — lose with class(风度). Being proud of how you performed, or at least realizing things you need to improve for next time, is the key. When it comes to losing, sportsmanship means ___47___ the winners willingly. Also, it means accepting the game result without complaint and without excuses, ___48___ you sometimes might doubt the referees(裁判员)made some questionable calls.
When you win, the good way is to be a(n) ___49___ and generous winner. Sportsmanship means admitting victories without putting your opponents to shame and letting ___50___ speak for themselves, that is, being quietly proud of success. The human body has developed its millions of nerves(神经) to be highly aware of what goes on both inside and outside of it. This helps us adjust to the outside world. Without our nerves and our brain, which is a system of nerves, we couldn't know what's happening. But we pay for our sensitivity (敏感). We can feel pain when the slightest thing is wrong with any part of our body. The history of torture ( 折磨 ) is based on the human body being open to pain.
But there is a way to handle pain. Look at the Indian fakir ( 苦行僧 ) who sits on a bed of nails (钉子). Fakirs can put a needle through an arm, and feel no pain. This ability that some humans have developed to handle pain should give us ideas about how the mind can deal with pain.
The big thing in standing pain is our attitude toward it. If the dentist says, “This will hurt a little,” it helps us to accept the pain. By staying relaxed, and by treating the pain as an interesting sensation (感觉), we can handle the pain without falling apart. After all, although pain is an unpleasant sensation, it is still a sensation, and sensations are the stuff of life.
51. The human body has developed a system of nerves that enables us to _______.

53. When the author mentions the Indian fakir, he shows that _______. A. fakirs have magic power B. Indians are not afraid of pain
C. people can learn to deal with pain D. some people are born without a sense of pain

C. Their nerves.
D. Their attitude.
C. feeling pain can be an interesting thing D. magic power is essential for reducing pain

(1) Patricia was worried. She had a job interview, and she wanted to look good. She decided to get some new clothes. The store owner, Pallas Hansen, helped Patricia find a suit. But when she left the store, she didn‟t pay for the suit!
(2) How could Patricia do this? She was in a special store called Career Closet in San Jose, California. Pallas Hansen and Charlotte Krumwiede started this nonprofit store to help women. They knew that many women don‟t find jobs because they don‟t have the right clothes for a job
interview. Women who don‟t have a lot of money have to use their money to buy food and clothes for their children. They can‟t buy clothes for themselves.
(3) Pallas and Charlotte started the store in 1992 after they heard about a store like this in Chicago. Volunteers work in the store. Working women donate most of the clothes to the store. This makes it possible for the customers at Career Closet to get clothes for free.
(4) Career Closet has helped 2,500 San Jose women, but clothes aren‟t the only things women get at the store. They also get confidence. Patricia is 36 years old. Her husband was hurt in an accident, and Patricia needed a job to support her seven children. She went to Career Closet and got a jacket, a skirt, and a blouse. “The whole day made me feel special,” she said. Patricia was a success at her interview, and she got the job. One reason she got it was because she was wearing the right clothes for the workplace.

If a business wants to sell its products internationally, it had better do some research first. This is a lesson that many companies, including some large American companies, have learned the hard way.
Sometimes the problem is in the name. When General Motors introduced its Chevy Nova into Spain, it ignored (忽略) the fact that No va in Spanish means “it doesn‟t go”. Sure enough, the Chevy Nova never went anywhere in Spain.
Sometimes it‟s the slogan that doesn‟t work. No company knows this better than Pepsi-Cola, with its “Come alive with Pepsi!” campaign. The campaign was successful in the United States, and Pepsi translated its slogan for its international campaign. As it turned out, Pepsi was telling Germans “Come out of the grave (坟墓)”and telling Chinese “Pepsi bring you death and happiness”.
Other times, the problem involves pictures and packaging (包装). A smiling round-cheeked baby had helped sell many bottles of Gerber baby food. So when Gerber sold its products in Africa, it kept the picture of the baby on the bottle. What Gerber didn‟t realize was that in many African countries, the picture on the bottle shows what the bottle has in it.
Even pure coincidence (纯粹巧合) can be involved. Thom McAn shoes have a Thom McAn “signature” inside. To people in Bangladesh, this signature looked like Arabian word for God‟ name. In Bangladesh, feet are considered unclean and they felt the company was insulting(侮辱) God‟s name by having people walk on it.
61. The car Chevy Nova did not sell in Spain because of its _______.
A. name B. quality C. color 62. The slogan for Pepsi-Cola works well in _______. A. America
B. China
C. Germany
D. Spain

A. Gerber Company doesn‟t understand cultures in African countries. B. Gerber baby food sells well in African countries C. Pepsi has problems in packaging

D. are of poor quality
65. According to the passage, what should a company do before it sells its products to a foreign country?
A. Learn a foreign language.
B. Advertise their products.
C. learn the cultures of a foreign country. D. Take an art course.

There was one thought that air pollution affected only the area immediately around large cities with factories and heavy automobile traffic. At present, we realize that although these are the areas with the worst air pollution, the problem is literally worldwide. On several occasions over the past decade, a heavy cloud of air pollution has covered the east of the United States and brought health
D. shape
warnings in rural areas away from any major concentration of manufacturing and automobile traffic. In fact, the very climate of the entire earth may be infected by air pollution. Some scientists consider that the increasing concentration of carbon dioxide in the air resulting from the burning of fossil fuels (coal and oil) is creating a “greenhouse effect”— conserving(保存)heat reflected from the earth and raising the world‟s average temperature. If this view is correct and the world‟s temperature is raised only a few degrees, much of the polar ice cap will melt and cities such as New York, Boston, Miami, and New Orleans will be in water.
Another view, less widely held, is that increasing particular matter in the atmosphere is blocking sunlight and lowering the earth‟s temperature — a result that would be equally disastrous. A drop of just a few degrees could create something close to a new ice age, and would make agriculture difficult or impossible in many of our top farming areas. Today we do not know for sure that either of these conditions will happen (though one recent government report drafted by experts in the field concluded that the greenhouse effect is very possible). Perhaps, if we are lucky enough, the two tendencies(倾向) will offset each other and the world‟s temperature will stay about the same as it is now. Driven by economic profits, people neglect the damage on our environment caused by the “advanced civilization”. Maybe the air pollution is the price the human beings have to pay for their development. But is it really worthwhile?
66. As pointed out at the beginning of the passage, people used to think that air pollution _______. A. cause widespread damage in the countryside B. affected the entire eastern half of the United States C. had damaging effect on health
D. existed only in cities and industrial areas
67. As to the greenhouse effect, the author _______. A. shares the same view with the scientist B. is uncertain of its happening
C. rejects it as being ungrounded(无根据的)
D. thinks that it will destroy the world soon
68. The word “offset” in the second paragraph could be replaced by _______. A. slip into B. make up for C. set up D. catch up with 69. It can be concluded that _______.
A. raising the world‟s temperature only a few degrees would not do much harm to life on earth B. lowering the world‟s temperature only a few degrees would lead major farming areas to disaster C. almost no temperature variations have occurred over the past decade D. the world‟s temperature will remain unchanging in the years to come 70. This passage is mainly about _______. A. the greenhouse effect
B. the burning of fossil fuels D. the likelihood of a new ice age
C. the potential effect of air pollution
