DESCRIPTION

TheTPS775xxandTPS776xxdevicesaredesignedtohaveafasttransientresponseandbestablewitha10μFlowESRcapacitor.Thiscombinationprovideshighperformanceatareasonablecost.BecausethePMOSdevicebehavesasalow-valueresistor,thedropoutvoltageisverylow(typically169mVatanoutputcurrentof500mAfortheTPS77x33)andisdirectlyproportionaltotheoutputcurrent.Additionally,sincethePMOSpasselementisavoltage-drivendevice,thequiescentcurrentisverylowandindependentofoutputloading(typically85μAoverthefullrangeofoutputcurrent,0mAto500mA).Thesetwokeyspecificationsyieldasignificantimprovementinoperatinglifeforbattery-poweredsystems.ThisLDOfamilyalsofeaturesasleepmode;applyingaTTLhighsignaltoEN(enable)shutsdowntheregulator,reducingthequiescentcurrentto1μAatTJ=+25°C.

TheRESEToutputoftheTPS775xxinitiatesaresetinmicrocomputerandmicroprocessorsystemsintheeventofanundervoltagecondition.AninternalcomparatorintheTPS775xxmonitorstheoutputvoltageoftheregulatortodetectanundervoltageconditionontheregulatedoutputvoltage.

Anotherpitfallassociatedwiththepnp-passelementisitstendencytosaturatewhenthedevicegoesintodropout.TheresultingdropinβforcesanincreaseinIBtomaintaintheload.Duringpowerup,thisIBincreasetranslatestolargestart-upcurrents.Systemswithlimitedsupplycurrentmayfailtostartup.Inbattery-poweredsystems,itmeansrapidbatterydischargewhenthevoltagedecaysbelowtheminimumrequiredforregulation.TheTPS775xxandTPS776xxquiescentcurrentsremainlowevenwhentheregulatordropsout,eliminatingbothproblems.

TheTPS775xxandTPS776xxfamiliesalsofeatureashutdownmodethatplacestheoutputinthehigh-impedancestate(essentiallyequaltothefeedback-dividerresistance)andreducesquiescentcurrentto2μA.Iftheshutdownfeatureisnotused,ENshouldbetiedtoground.

TheTPS775xxandTPS776xxfamiliesarestableatzeroload;nominimumloadisrequiredforoperation.

FB—PinConnection(AdjustableVersionOnly)

TheFBpinisaninputpintosensetheoutputvoltageandclosetheloopfortheadjustableoption.TheoutputvoltageissensedthrougharesistordividernetworktoclosetheloopasitisshowninFigure25.Normally,thisconnectionshouldbeasshortaspossible;however,theconnectioncanbemadenearacriticalcircuittoimproveperformanceatthatpoint.Internally,FBconnectstoahigh-impedancewide-bandwidthamplifierandnoisepickupfeedsthroughtotheregulatoroutput.RoutingtheFBconnectiontominimize/avoidnoisepickupisessential.

ExternalCapacitorRequirements

Aninputcapacitorisnotusuallyrequired;however,aceramicbypasscapacitor(0.047μForlarger)improvesloadtransientresponseandnoiserejectioniftheTPS775xxorTPS776xxarelocatedmorethanafewinchesfromthepowersupply.Ahigher-capacitanceelectrolyticcapacitormaybenecessaryiflarge(hundredsofmilliamps)loadtransientswithfastrisetimesareanticipated.

Likealllowdropoutregulators,theTPS775xxandTPS776xxrequireanoutputcapacitorconnectedbetweenOUTandGNDtostabilizetheinternalcontrolloop.Theminimumrecommendedcapacitancevalueis10μFandtheESR(equivalentseriesresistance)mustbebetween50mΩand1.5Ω.Capacitorvalues10μForlargerareacceptable,providedtheESRislessthan1.5Ω.Solidtantalumelectrolytic,aluminumelectrolytic,andmultilayerceramiccapacitorsareallsuitable,providedtheymeettherequirementsdescribedpreviously.
